Adult Palatal Expansion

Widen a narrow upper jaw — often without jaw surgery.

A child’s palate expands easily. An adult’s doesn’t — the mid-palatal suture becomes resistant with age. At Bella Smile, we read your anatomy first: CBCT imaging, bone thickness, suture maturity, and airway, then choose the least invasive approach that still delivers true skeletal correction — not just tipped teeth.

Why it matters

A narrow upper jaw drives crossbites, crowding, a constricted smile, poor jaw coordination, limited tongue space, and nasal breathing concerns. We don’t just push teeth outward — we widen the jaw itself.

MARPE: skeletal expansion without jaw surgery

MARPE anchors the expander to the bone with temporary miniscrews, not the teeth — directing force where it belongs. For the right patient, MARPE opens the mid-palatal suture and achieves real skeletal expansion with minimal tooth tipping, correcting significant discrepancies without traditional surgery.

Not every adult is a candidate — here’s how we know

Age doesn’t decide it. Suture maturity does. We evaluate CBCT imaging, bone thickness, and palatal anatomy before recommending treatment, so you know exactly what your anatomy can achieve before starting.

When MARPE isn’t enough

Minimally assisted expansion — a limited surgical release lets the expander work predictably when MARPE alone can’t.

Surgically assisted expansion — for a mature or resistant skeletal structure, a surgeon releases resistance and we widen the palate with full orthodontic coordination.

The front-tooth gap, explained

A gap between the upper front teeth after expansion means it worked — the palate opened. We control the timing so that gap closes deliberately, not by accident.

Expansion and the airway

Widening the palate can ease nasal resistance for some patients — but it isn’t a treatment for sleep apnea or airway disorders. When breathing is a real concern, we bring in an ENT or sleep physician.

The right level of treatment — no more, no less

Traditional expansion. MARPE. Minimally assisted. Surgically assisted. Or none at all. Your orthodontist matches the approach to your anatomy — the goal is never just a wider arch, it’s a stable, correct skeletal result.
