Gently widens a narrow upper jaw during growth to correct crossbites, develop the arches, and create space for permanent teeth.
What expansion does
An expander widens the upper jaw with gentle, steady pressure on the upper molars. It works best while a child is still growing, before the palate fuses. Expansion can:
Correct crossbites, including skeletal crossbites, and certain underbites
Develop the arches and create space for crowded teeth — helping avoid extractions and teeth becoming impacted or stuck
Improve how the upper and lower jaws fit together
Support more balanced facial and dental development
We use a mini expander — as effective as full-size, and more comfortable for your child.
Expansion and the airway
A narrow upper jaw is sometimes linked to nasal obstruction and mouth breathing. Widening the palate can support the airway and, in some children, improve nasal airflow — but expansion alone isn’t a treatment for sleep apnea or breathing disorders. We check for airway concerns at every early orthodontic evaluation.
What to expect at home
We’ll show you how to activate the expander with a small key. Once your child reaches the target width, the appliance stays in place for several months to let the new width stabilize. A removable option, the Invisalign Palatal Expander, may also fit some cases. Your orthodontist will recommend what’s right for your child’s age, growth, bite, and needs.
